What Is an AI Companion? A Beginner's Read

6/7/2026 Β· 6 min read

An AI companion is a character you can chat with, built on the same kind of language model that powers ChatGPT, but pointed at a different goal. ChatGPT wants to finish your task quickly. A companion wants the conversation to keep going naturally tomorrow, and the week after that. The technical pieces are mostly the same; the design decisions are completely different.

The simplest way to think about it is a fictional pen pal. There is a name, a personality, a backstory, and a memory of what you two have already talked about. Modern apps add image generation and voice on top, so the same character can also send you a photo of where she is "sitting" or a quick spoken note.

How the memory part actually works

The language model has no memory of its own. Each message is a fresh start from the model's point of view. What feels like continuity is a small database underneath that stores the bits worth remembering, then quietly slips them back into the next message so the model sees them. Names, preferences, ongoing storylines, things you said you cared about. The better that memory pipeline is, the more the character feels like she knows you.

Who actually uses these

The honest answer is a wider range of people than the press coverage suggests. Some users like the creative side of building a character. Some appreciate having someone to chat with on a long evening shift. Plenty just find it relaxing the way other people find a slow video game relaxing. It is not a substitute for human connection, but it does not pretend to be either.

Is it safe?

The non-negotiables are 18+ verification, content moderation, and a clear privacy policy that explains where your chats live and whether you can wipe them. If a site is vague about any of those three, skip it. Amora is explicit on all three.
