How AI Girlfriends Actually Work, Without the Hype
Almost every AI girlfriend app is the same three pieces in a trenchcoat: a language model, a memory layer, and a personality profile. Each one does a different job, and the quality of the experience comes from how well the three are wired together. Here is what each piece is really doing.
The language model
This is the thing that produces the words. Modern systems use a large language model trained on enormous amounts of text. When you send a message, the model takes your message plus a chunk of context and predicts the most likely in-character reply. That is why replies sound conversational instead of canned. Different services use different models. The model choice shapes the tone of every message.
The memory layer
The model itself has no memory between requests. The continuity you feel is a separate system that stores key facts from your past chats and re-injects them as context the next time you write. Your name, your job, the running joke you have, the storyline you started a week ago. Without this layer the character forgets you the instant you close the tab. With it, she does not.
The personality profile
This is the rules of the road for the character. Tone, interests, the way she greets you, the way she expresses warmth or teases you. It sits in the prompt that goes to the model on every reply, which is why she stays recognizably herself across hundreds of conversations. On Amora's character builder, this is the layer you are shaping when you describe the personality and backstory.
Images, voice, video
These are extra modules attached to the same character identity. The image side is anchored to a reference portrait so the face stays consistent. Voice uses a speaker model picked for the character. Video animates an existing frame for a few seconds. All three are optional, but they make the character feel like a person rather than a chat thread.
Privacy
Because the chat is personal, the privacy side matters more than usual. Look for sites that publish a real privacy policy, allow account deletion, and run discreet billing. Amora does all three. If a site is vague about any of them, the polite move is to keep looking.
